Herman Community Park Watch this site for Suttons Bay Township’s newest park development! You will see pictures of the existing site, architectural renderings of the vision for the park, status of fundraising and the construction progress! In 2008 Suttons Bay Township Parks and Recreation partnered with the Community Foundation with a goal of securing funds to purchase and develop 126 acres of property in Suttons Bay into Herman Community Park. In July of 2009 we closed on the acquisition thanks to local donations and major grants from the Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund (MNRTF), Rotary Charities and the Leelanau Conservancy. With the first step completed we have now focused our efforts on developing the property into a vibrant community park. Our goal is to provide active recreation opportunities and facilities, including soccer fields, tennis courts, fishing, hunting and nature trails. We will also be protecting wetlands, wildlife habitat and woodlands for all to enjoy for hiking, nature exploration and environmental education. The park will be a year round facility offering ice skating under a covered pavilion, snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter months. Future development plans include a building that will have a warming room. The park is currently open to the public from dawn to dusk.
